The MZ-9 submachine gun is produced in Israel by EMTAN Karmiel Ltd. This weapon is offered in several configurations that vary by barrel length (5 or 7 inches) and by type of shoulder stock. EMTAN also produces a semi-automatic only carbine version, known as MZ-9S, for export civilian sales and for domestic private security use.
EMTAN MZ-9 submachine gun is broadly based on the highly popular AR-15 platform, versions of which are also produced by EMTAN as a line of MZ-15 rifles. Since EMTAN MZ-9 submachine gun uses relatively low-powered 9×19 Luger ammunition, it has a simple blowback action. It fires from closed bolt and has M16 type hammer-fired trigger unit with M16-style controls, including safety/fire selector, bolt hold-open release button and charging handle. Receiver is also made to basic AR-15 style pattern, with upper and lower halves made from aluminum alloy and connected by two cross pins. Ammunition is fed from detachable box magazines, compatible with Czech-made CZ SCORPION EVO III submachine gun. EMTAN MZ-9 is equipped either with an M4-type collapsible shoulder stock or with a simplified two-struts shoulder stock. Sights and other ancillary equipment are attached using integrated Picatinny rails.
