The SS2 family of rifles (from the Indonesian “Senapan Serbu 2” – Assault Rifle 2) is manufactured in Indonesia by the PT Pindad factory and based on the SS1 (a copy of the FN FNC) Rifle, made by the same factory under license from Belgian company FN Herstal.

SS2 rifles have been in use by the Indonesian Army since 2005, and are also offered for export. Initially available in three basic versions: (Standard rifle SS2 V1, Carbine SS2 V2 and Para / Sniper SS2 V4) it is now also available in a Subcompact ‘SS2 V5’ variation, first revealed to the world in 2008.

Technical Description: (Also see FN FNC)

All SS2 rifles share the same basic design and same two-part upper / lower receiver construction. Both upper and lower receiver parts are made from aluminum alloy and connected to one another using two cross-pins. The gas-operated action uses a long-stroke gas piston, located above the barrel, and a multi-lug rotary bolt that locks into the barrel extension.

The charging handle is attached to the bolt carrier on the right side and moves with the bolt group when the gun is fired. A fire mode/safety lever is located on the left side of the gun, and permits either single shot or full automatic fire. All versions are fitted with a side-folding skeletonized buttstock, and also have an integral Picatinny type rail on the top of the receiver. In all versions other than SS2 V4 this rail is fitted with a removable carrying handle with diopter-type rear sight.

The front sight is attached to the gas block, leaving the muzzle part of the barrel unobstructed, so it may be used to fire rifle grenades. The SS2 V4 version is issued without a front sight base or carrying handle, being fitted instead with telescopic sight and optional cheek rest on the buttstock. The SS2 V4 also features a heavier barrel for more accurate long-range fire. SS2 V1 and SS2 V2 variants can be fitted with a 40 mm under-barrel grenade launcher, also made under license by Pindad.
