200 series Kalashnikov assault rifle: AK-200, AK-201, AK-202, AK-203, AK-204, AK-205 (Russia)

“Two hundredth” series of Kalashnikov AK assault rifles was initially conceived in around 2009 in an attempt to produce an improved variant of the basic “hundred” series (AK-74M, AK-101AK-105). Most improvements centered on the ergonomics. However, around 2011 development of the AK-200 was temporarily stopped, and restarted again in around 2016. As of now, 200-series Kalashnikov assault rifles, which include a complete family in three calibers (5,45mm, 5,56mm and 7.62x39mm), are offered for export sales and for domestic law enforcement users. Russian army is set to purchase more advanced and lighter in weight, but also somewhat more expensive AK-12 and AK-15 assault rifles.
Originally “200-series” AK rifles were displayed under names such as AK-74M1, AK-101M, AK-102M etc. However, since 2018 these are officially designated as AK-200, AK-201 and so on until AK-205.

200-series Kalashnikov rifles have same basic design, layout and major features (including famous reliability and durability), but feature improved ergonomics and modern accessory interfaces. All rifles have same long stroke gas piston operated action with rotary bolt locking, and same stamped steel receivers. However, front trunnion and rear sight base are redesigned to include top cover hinge, and top cover itself is modified with addition of the Picatinny rail on top and the locking mechanism at the rear. For disassembly, user has to rotate top cover latch, which is located on the right side of the cover, and then swing the cover up and forward. Other changes include side-folding, telescoping shoulder stock with 4 positions. Stock is strong enough to withstand routine use of 40mm underbarrel grenade launcher, and also can be used for hand-to-hand combat. New polymer pistol grip and new polymer forend with intergated Picatinny rails are fitted to each gun. Barrels are equipped with elongated “birdcage” type flash hiders / compensators. Iron sights are graduated up to 800 meters on full-size guns and up to 500 meters on compact versions. Full-size guns (5.45mm AK-200, 5.56mm AK-201 and 7.62mm AK-203) can host an underbarrel grenade launcher (i.e. GP-34) or a bayonet. All versions can be equipped with quick-detachable tactical sound suppressors (silencers optimized for supersonic ammunition).
