The VPO-209 shotgun is manufactured by Russian company “Molot Oruzhie”. This weapon is peculiar to Russian market, and is sold in Russia under the “shotgun” license, which is much easier to obtain than a “rifle” license.
The VPO-209 shotgun is produced by converting surplus Kalashnikov AKM assault rifles to semi-automatic only, and re-barreling with new smooth-bore barrel of .366 (9.55mm) nominal caliber with last 120mm being rifled (so called “Paradox” bore). Magazines are modified from standard 3o-round 7.62mm AKM magazines by restricting capaity to 10 rounds and modifying feed path for a wider cartridge case.
