The GP-46 underbarrel grenade launcher is a new product, developed by the “Kalashnikov” concern specifically for export. It was first showcased during the “Army 2024” expo in August of 2024, with the statement that it was designed on request from some undisclosed foreign customer.
The GP-46 grenade launcher differs from similar Russian weapon such as GP-25, GP-30 or GP-34 by using “NATO standard” 40x46mm LV ammunition. It is said to be compatible with most types of such rounds, which are produced and used in many countries across the globe. The primary host weapons for the GP-46 are Kalashnikov assault rifles such as 7.62x39mm AK-103, AK-203 and AK-15, or 5.56mm AK-101, AK-201 and AK-19. However, a GP-46 also can be used as a stand-alone weapon with addition of a specially designed module with a shoulder stock and a pistol grip.
The GP-46 grenade launcher is a single shot, breech-loading weapon. To load and unload, its barrel can be swung to either side after pushing a release lever, located just in front of the breech of the barrel and above it. The thumb-operated trigger is also located above the barrel, around the mid-length of the gun. To fire, the trigger lever must be pushed down. The safety switch is located at the rear of the weapon, on its stationary breech block. All three controls are duplicated on either side of the gun, making it truly ambidextrous in handling.
The ladder-type sight is mounted to the right of the center line, with folding rear and front sights. Rear sight is marked for ranges of up to 400 meters in 50-meter increments, and does not allow indirect fire.
The add-on stock, intended for stand-alone use, is provided with a side-folding, adjustable polymer stock, taken from the latest version of an AK-12 rifle. Stock also features a rubber buttpad to soften the recoil.
