The .44 Special cartridge was created by Smith & Wesson in 1907 as a stretched-out and more powerful version of the older .44 Russian round. Originally a black-powder number, it was soon converted to smokeless powder and is still produced in this form. This round is still popular in USA for target shooting and self-defense.
